In the heart of the captivating rolling meadows, lived a shepherd boy. His being was pure, simple, and honest. His main role was to care for his flock of sheep.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind among the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plot.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep here had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
